and Liz’s place, she went to the bathroom, and right to bed. Tomorrow, she was going to meet her two other brothers for real.

The next morning, she woke up listening for the voices of her other brothers. She would recognize them from the previous calls. China was so excited. She rushed down the stairs to find that they were still in bed. They had driven all night, arrived late, had something to eat, and they always slept-in anyway. So, she glumly ate the breakfast offered, and listened for them. She heard them stir behind the door. It was agony to hear them rustle and moan the morning into existence. China was so impatient. She stopped chewing her tofu bacon, and stood up to await them. Finally, they came through the door, dressed in pajamas. She ran into the arms of, first, Thad, and then, Jeremy. They smelled like onions. Al came in to join them so they were all hugging, but they had something to eat, clicked the door, and went back to bed. China felt let-down.

She helped with the dishes, and had another coffee with Liz, but all she did was talk bad about the sisters. China already didn’t want them in her life. Finally, she heard them showering and going to the bathroom. The kid was away at camp, they had his room, so they got their own bathroom, well shared, but they were used to that. China waited at the table, her leg jiggling in anticipation. Thad and Jeremy joined them at the table for coffee.

Thad cleared his throat as if to speak, Al came in the room, Liz shifted over, then he dragged a chair over to beside his wife, and draped his arm around her. China felt odd, and sipped her coffee. Meanwhile, Thad drew in a breath, and Jeremy hugged him. Thad let out his breath, and started the story, ‘…we thought we’d go to Georgia first, so we nipped off the 10, and headed thar. O’course, we bin thar before, but we know some people thar too. We visited them fer one night, an’ then got up, and drove fer the whole nex day. We traded driving y’all. Georgia is pretty y’all, lazy, an’ hot; jus how we like it, so we took the long way to Tifton, and drove around a bit; took our time getting’ back to the 10, and had a sleep, but first we went through the botanical gardens, the zoo, and Little River Canyon in Alabama; only free stuff…’ Jeremy put his arm over Thad’s shoulder, Thad’s hand met Jeremy’s, and squeezed it in reassurance.

Thad drew a breath in, and went on, ‘…so we gone to Biloxi…in Alabama… stayed for a day, an’ did some more free stuff, like listening to the Blues in the park. We cleaned up in the Gulf, and caught ourselves a small alligator in the Mississippi River. We ate ‘im…’ Thad rubbed his belly, and then rolled his eyes, as if remembering the taste. ‘…’e was good barbecued…people should eat ‘em more…then we went to New Orleans…walked down Bourbon Street…went to church at St Louis’s.. thar was free music everywar…great place. From thar, we ran into Corpus Christi…in Texas ..we went that far cause we liked the name…’ He stopped, looked around the table, when nobody bit, he went on. ‘…Corpus Christi means body of Christ don’t cha know y’all… thar we kilt a Blue Heron…barbecued, and ate ‘im..’e was good…we spent a day on the beach …then we toured some art…in New Mexico we saw real white sand, and went to a free museum … its still part of the USA y’all…’ Everybody nodded. ‘…from thar we crossed over into Mexico, and went to a place called Chihuahua…we jus walked around, an’ looked at stuff…we crossed back over, an’ didn’t stop driven’ until we got to Tucson in Arizona…thar we saw cactuses…huge...rocks…an’ believe it or not a waterfall…then we drove to ware you live in California…we are gonna go through Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, an’ Tennessee on the way back…see a lot of the USA…trip ‘o a lifetime…’ They pulled apart, and finished their coffees at the sa
